The challenge
The existing transmission grid is being challenged by new, renewable energy sources that need to be integrated into the existing infrastructure and by the ambition of a European power grid with increased cross-border power exchange. It is a strategic priority to facilitate this development while also safeguarding security of supply.
The goal
The project aims to develop overarching models for the rapid identification of operational strategies for preventive, corrective and restorative measures that ensure resilience in the transmission network.
The project
A traditional method of safeguarding security of supply would be to invest heavily in infrastructure and to build a solution that would most likely be reliable at all times. The project “Resilient and Probabilistic Reliability Management of the Transmission Grid” uses a probabilistic method instead. This involves developing models based on large volumes of data that calculate the probability of incidents occurring. When these calculations are used in day-to-day operations, it is possible to develop strategies to absorb and handle incidents and restore supply and normal operation in real time. In RaPid, methodology will be developed to take such operational strategies into account in the long-term grid development.
