The challenge

The power system is becoming increasingly complex: more extreme weather is expected, older network infrastructure needs to be refurbished, and operation of the entire Nordic power system is changing. This means that new knowledge will be required to enable Statnett to understand a changed risk picture, and ensure that we can operate our facilities optimally in the future. This applies to maintenance of infrastructure, replacement of components and capacity development.

The project

VulPro (Risk and Vulnerability prognosis for power system development and asset
management) will examine the impact of the condition of components on risk and vulnerability in Statnett’s infrastructure. The project will develop knowledge and methods that can give a more complete picture of the various risks and vulnerabilities and their importance in the power system. One of Vulpro’s goals is to narrow the gap between analyses of individual components or infrastructure and analyses at an overarching power system level.

The goal

The project will better equip Statnett to assess and manage vulnerabilities in the power system. The better the forecasts we obtain about vulnerabilities in our infrastructure, the better basis decision-makers will have for developing the power system in the short and long term. We also need new knowledge in the field to strengthen security of supply in Norway.
